Al-Qur'an
The Quran is the Word of Allah and contains complete guidance for mankind. It is a compilation of the verbal revelations given to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of twenty three years. It lays down for the believers the law and commandments, codes for their social and moral behavior, and contains a comprehensive religious philosophy. The language of the Quran is Arabic. The Quran is divided into 114 Chapters and each Chapter consists of individual verses. The Chapters (called Surah in Arabic) are of varying lengths, some consisting of a few lines while others run for many pages. The text of the Quran has remained unchanged over the past 1500 years. It is memorized by millions of Muslims since the beginning of revelation. The billions of copies of the Quran circulating in the world today are all identical down to a single letter. And this is not strange since Allah says in the Quran that He Himself will guard this book: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Quran 15:9) Much of the Quran is about God, His attributes and man’s relationship to Him. But it also contains directives for its believers, historical accounts of certain prophets and peoples, arguments for accepting Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a genuine prophet and good news for the believers and warnings for the disbelievers.
Hadith
Islam has two primary sources. First is the Qurʾān which is the direct word of God inspired to the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. The second source is the Prophet’s teachings. These teachings include his words, actions, and things he approved of. The Prophet’s teachings are called Sunna. The Sunna is found in texts called ḥadīth. A ḥadīth is a statement of the Prophet peace be upon him which was narrated by his companions and subsequently narrated to the next generation until these sayings were compiled in ḥadīth collections.
